Cities in Poland

Short article on Gdansk

My wife and I took a long weekend trip to Sopot and Gdynia in early May. We took the trip by car however we would recommend anyone to take the train. The public transportation is pretty good especially compared to the United States or Canada, it takes only 3.5 hours and you get there without being tired. The road trip on the other hand takes 4 hours at least and you arrive in the tricity consisting of Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot. There is still no freeway leading you from Warsaw to Gdansk. There is roughly 70 km of 2 lane road each way that leads your north from Warsaw. There is also a real 20 sthg km of freeway near Gdansk. There is a nice beltway that goes around tricity. There is talk that a freeway linking Warsaw and Gdansk will be finished by 2012 but as of now 75% of the way goes on one lane road each way with a shoulder lane. Driving in such conditons makes you tired. In any case - when we got into Sopot we checked into Opera hotel. This was a great choice! The hotel is situated outside of the city center of Sopot but still within walking distance to dowtown. It is located in a forest and the only noise you hear from this hotel is the sound of a wood pecker or birds chirping. The standard of the rooms was really good and rooms were very clean. We spent 2 days in Sopot. We explored the area around the hotel. There is a trail leading you from the hotel to a hill with a great view of the Sopot area and the Baltic Sea Coastline. It is a great place for a picnic. I was suprised that this area was hardly explored by tourists. My wife and I would virtually feel as if we were miles away from any bigger city. Then we strolled the beaches of Sopot and we explored the downtown. The beaches around Sopot tend to be crowded so if you are looking for some solitude you will have to drive out from the city itself. But there is a nice pier that offers you spectacular views of the coastline. The beaches have nice cliffs and the whole area is very hilly. I was pleasantly surprised. The downtown area is small but very nice with very nice buildings and beautiful architecture. We left Sopot for Gdynia after 2 days. We stayed at Hotel Gdynia. From the outside it was not so welcoming but they completely renovated the inside and it was a very good 3 star hotel. We took the room with a view of the bay and the beach. Gdynia itself is a very small town and does not have much of downtown area. The beach around the hotel was very nice and had a long boardwalk. So this was nice to stroll around the beach. Hotels in Gdynia are less expensive than in Gdansk but Gdansk is very close by. You can take a taxi, train, bus and within 15 mins you should be in Gdansk. After 1 day we decided to visit Gdansk and the old town and this was spectacular. It has been completely refurbished. You can easily spend 1 day strolling along the Old Town of Gdansk and not be bored. The churches, the history, the old architecture are all very enchanting.

Positive aspects:
I would definitely go to see the Old Town. I was only there for one day, so I cannot make too many judgements on what is good or bad about the town.
Negative aspects:
It's somewhat cold in November!

Positive aspects:
I would really recommend to hire a guide and take a walk around the city center. We ate at the Gdansk Restaurancja - good Salonik Restauracja polska - excellent ! Everybody should go to the consert in Oliva cathedral to hear the very famous organ - unforgettable
Negative aspects:
The tram and train is a very goot way to get around, but you should make up some written information in english about the tram/train system and espesially the ticketsystem. All information is in polish and almost nobody talks english. The ticket-system is very different from most systems and is therefore almost impossible to understand without beeing able to read the language.

Positive aspects:
I come here on business, so I will return to Gdansk. It is a nice city with lots to see. Local people are quite friendly and it is very safe to walk around even in the evening. Your money goes a long way here and the Polish Vodka is especially nice - the Bison vodka with Apple Juice is delicious! Get out and about and you will find some new gastronomic delights in the old town streets - lots of small intimate places springing up week by week almost! And there are also the good old standbys - TGI Fridays and McDONALDS! Sopot is close-by and well worth visiting, during the day it is like an old English seaside resort (including the longest wooden pier in Europe) and at night it allegedly becomes like Sodom and Gomorroh with some hot clubs and bars for the young and young at heart.....Roosters in both Gdansk and Sopot is quite a good place to eat and also to view the passing scene (and serving wenches)...
Negative aspects:
Polish food is certainly not to everyones taste, very plain and meaty (Pigs knuckles and feet etc) and even the salads are pretty frightening (Chopped lettuce and more chopped lettuce - sometimes with chopped beetroot!) Check out the menus first! Lots of roadworks and tram line building going on, but doesnt affect the Old Town. Nothing really negative about Gdansk.....try it and see! before the Stag and Hen parties get there.

Positive aspects:
Gdansk has a very charming old town with lots of pedestrianised areas which is nice. The river walk was very pleasant, as were all the streets leading from the river. The buildings were beautiful, we could not stop taking photographs! All the restaurants were quite good but I could not pick out one above the rest. We took a train to Sopot and as it was a lovely sunny day, spent an hour or so at the seaside walking on the pier, but there is nothing else to do there although there were some nice looking restaurants on the road leading to the large sandy beach. We would not return to Gdansk only because we feel we have thoroughly explored the town and there are so many other places to see. But I would really recommend it as a weekend destination.
Negative aspects:
No serious negatives - some of the restaurant staff were not very friendly, in some cases quite rude but then we also met some nice, smiling, happy people.

Positive aspects:
The food was good and cheap. Most of the restaurants had excellent service, eg. Sphinx (or something). I would recommend to go to the tower of archaeological museum. From there you can see the Maria's church better. This was my second time in Gdansk and I think I will return there again.
Negative aspects:
Some restaurants had lousy service. We left from one restaurant without ordering, because we didn´t even get a menu after sitting there about 20 minutes! There´s never enough english info...

Lovely city. Enjoyed it very much. I wish the Maritime museum also labeled things in English. There was a sheet provided but it was very confusing in its layout. I highly recommend using Orbis to take tours or get guides.

Positive aspects:
Delicious cakes in every bakery, the climb to the tower of St Mary's curch is a must because of the nice view over the city, the old centre is a small place so it's easy to learn to know it even during a short stay, the other two nearby towns (Gdynia, Sopot) are easy to reach through the local train line (SKM) and are worth a one-day visit.
Negative aspects:
Dirty surroundings outside the old centre but worth seeing anyhow, the tracks in the Gdansk train station were marked very unclearly, the lack of English speaking people although older people were able to speak German.
